Technical Theatre Workshops

Standing In The Wings is delighted to be able to offer talks and workshops to schools about careers within the theatre industry, including Stage Management, Lighting Design, Production Management, Sound Design, Costume Design, Set Design and Direction. This can be developed into a mentoring programme for school productions as well.

Why workshops?

We’ve found over the years that many young people want to go into the arts as a performer. However, not many students realise the plethora of other careers available within the industry, so we’ve developed our workshops and mentoring programmes to open up opportunities. With us, they can learn more about what’s out there, speak to some industry freelancers and develop technical skills.

How does mentoring work?

For school productions, we will work with the student technical team to guide them on how to create lighting and sound designs plus the key elements of Stage Management throughout the rehearsal process. We will then support them through the final stages of the production and give them the confidence to run their own department for show week.

Our mentoring programme is accompanied by our own Theatre Companion guide – a PDF document detailing the different roles in theatre, how they work together, the skills needed for each role and some general theatre etiquette, knowledge and hints and tips.

Our Mantra

Whilst not every one of the students we encounter may end up with a career in the arts, the skills they learn through arts-based subjects encourages teamwork, communication, confidence and time management skills which are vital to any career path.

“Standing In The Wings provided excellent talks on careers within the Creative Arts. They engaged our students and offered an incredible amount of information on what a life within the Creative Arts looks like. Kathryn was extremely knowledgeable in a number of fields and was so valuable to have at the school. She was professional and engaging which made the sessions engaging and fun for our students.” – Kathryn Moore, Director of Creative Arts at Gordon’s School, Surrey.

“Standing In The Wings are the most professional, adaptable and wonderful company I have the pleasure to work with!” – Rachel Kirk, Drama Teacher at Huxlow Academy, Northamptonshire.
